A new species and first record of Dracoderes (Kinorhyncha: Allomalorhagida: Dracoderidae) from American waters, with an identification key of the genus ArchiMer

A new species of Dracoderes, D. spyro sp. nov., is described from Hispaniola Island (Caribbean Sea), and represents the first record of this genus in American waters. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of lateroventral spines on segments 3–4 and 6–9, lateral accessory spines on segment 5, lateroventral tubes on segments 2, 5 and 10, and laterodorsal tubes on segment 8. Additionally, a dichotomous key to the species level for the genus Dracoderes is included.

ANNUAL SKELETAL EXTENSION OF TWO REEF-BUILDING CORALS FROM THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN SEA Boletín de Investigaciones

The skeletal growth of the scleractinian corals Diploria labyrinthiformis (Linnaeus 1758) and Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander 1786) from Isla Grande (north of Rosario islands), Colombian Caribbean, was determined from annual extension increments revealed by X-radiography of 4-6 mm thick slabs obtained along the axis of maximum growth. The skeletal extension average rate for the last 22 years for D. labyrinthiformis was 3.8 mm year-1 (SE 0.10; N = 87). The correlation between growth of D. labyrinthiformis and hours of sunlight was significantly negative. ARMINA JULIANA (GASTROPODA: NUDIBRANCHIA: ARMINIDAE), A NEW SPECIES FROM THE SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN Boletín de Investigaciones

A new species of the genus Armina,collected off the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia at depths of 310 and 460 m in soft bottoms is described. The number of notal ridges, the position of the genital papilla, the size and the shape of radular teeth and the features of the masticatory process are the main differences to other congeneric species occurring in Atlantic waters. Armina juliana n. sp. is the first record for the family Arminidae in the Colombian Caribbean.

Community structure of microfitobenthos from the central coastal zone of Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones

ABSTRACT Microphytobenthos is a community that groups benthic photosynthetic microorganisms. In Venezuela and the other countries in the Caribbean Sea, this group has been scarcely studied, so its diversity is unknown. This study aims to describe the spatial and temporal variations of its composition and abundance in the central coastal zone of Venezuela. Samplings were conducted monthly from June 2014 to March 2015, in random stations at depths less than 20 m. Richness and abundance data were processed through multivariate hypothesis tests (Anosim - SIMPER - nMDS). In recent years, the use of fads in Martinique has evolved from an experimental stage to a productive one. This transformation results in the pitching up of operational device park by the regional fishery committee. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a revolutionary method to monitor marine biodiversity from animal DNA traces. Examining the capacity of eDNA to provide accurate biodiversity measures in species‐rich ecosystems such as coral reefs is a prerequisite for their application in long‐term monitoring. Here, we surveyed two Colombian tropical marine reefs, the island of Providencia and Gayraca Bay near Santa Marta, using eDNA and underwater visual census (UVC) methods. ABSTRACT The interstitial cyclopoid copepod Neocyclops ferrarii Rocha, 1995 was found in samples obtained from littoral areas of Rodadero Bay, northern Colombia. The specimens from Colombia share the diagnostic features of N. ferrarii presented in the original description. Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Metacirolana agaricicola Kensley, 1984 from the Caribbean Sea of Colombia is redescribed, with particular reference to its sexual dimorphism. Metacirolana agujae n. sp., known only from Colombia, is decribed. The interspecific affinities of both species are discussed and notes on their habits are given.

ABSTRACT The performance of the winged pearl oyster Pteria colymbus juveniles under suspended culture conditions was evaluate, including five culture methods and two seasons: upwelling and non-upwelling. Culture methods comprised enclosures confining the oysters: BTBC, BBO and BTO; and two other unconfined-oyster: OFOB and FNS. The initial shell height of the oysters ranged between 31-35 mm in both seasons. The increase in shell size and dry mass of soft tissues showed significant differences between seasons. Implementation of an ongoing FAD programme in Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) during the period 1993-2000 ArchiMer

In Curacao, deep-water fads with grp surface buoys were developed and tested. The first fad was deployed in 1993. Up to now, a total of 5 fads were deployed at the following depths: 730, 685, 700, 754 and 574 metres. Changes were made to the surface buoy, resulting in an improved design, the mkii surface buoy. One fad lasted three years and one month. The main features of the design used are: the use of a sparbuoy design with constant tension on the moving chain to avoid slamming and jerking of the surface buoy; liberal use of sacrificial anodes, and maintenance to replace these anodes about once a year; the use of a short anchor chain with depth buoys, that does not touch bottom; a one-piece inverted mushroom anchor. Hydroids of the Allan Hancock Pacific Expeditions, and those of the Allan Hancock Caribbean Sea Expedition, were examined by Charles McLean Fraser in a series of reports published between 1938 and 1948. A total of 159 new nominal species was described from material collected in the eastern Pacific between Peru and southern British Columbia. Accounts of an additional five nominal species were based on specimens from the southern Caribbean Sea. No valid holotypes were designated in accordance with provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature for any of these taxa. The traditional ways of fishing, based on benthic fish exploitation, have seen the decreasing of their profitability due to the over-fishing of the narrow continental shelf offering few resources. Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. ABSTRACT To determine the coral reefmorpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism, through diving and fishing. Three sampling sites were evaluated during two years recording the distribution of benthic organisms, environmental variables and Snappers density (Lutjanidae). Preservation state of metastable magnesian calcite in periplatform sediments from the Caribbean Sea over the last million years ArchiMer

Carbonate-rich periplatform sediments represent an active carbon reservoir containing metastable aragonite and magnesian calcite (Mg-calcite, > 4 mol % MgCO(3)). Since Mg-calcite is highly soluble, the preservation state of this mineral provides information on past carbonate systems at water depths shallower than the lysocline. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the carbonate-rich fine fraction (< 63 mu m) was determined for the last 940 ka in a sediment core collected from the Walton Basin (Northern Caribbean Sea, 846 m water depth). Mg/Ca ratios for Mg-calcite showed clear glacial-interglacial cycles with high values (12 mol % MgCO(3)) during interglacials. The occurrence of the longfin mako Isurus paucus is reported in the Colombian Caribbean for the first time. Three specimens were captured, one was caught by artisanal fishermen in Concha bay and the two others were captured in the open sea by an industrial fishing boat. This is the first evidence of the occurrence of this species in shallow and offshore waters of the Colombian Caribbean.
